Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY USED IN WATEROAM'S FILTRATION SYSTEMS?
Our filtration products utilize advanced hollow-fibre technologies. You can learn more about our use of ultrafiltration in our blog here!
DO WATEROAM'S WATER FILTRATION SYSTEMS FILTER SEA WATER?
With the advancement of technologies, seawater can be treated through Reverse Osmosis or desalination. Both of these require a huge amount of energy and often electricity. Wateroam's filtration systems are built to be operated with a hand pump to make sure they can meet the needs of disaster-hit populations who often don't have electricity available. Although our filters exclude sea water treatment, they do specialize in removing bacteria and viruses from other water reservoirs such as lakes and rivers, which can cause deadly water-borne diseases.
WHY USE ULTRA FILTRATION (UF) HOLLOW-FIBRE, INSTEAD OF CERAMIC FILTER (CF)?
When compared to CF, UF hollow-fibre can achieve a smaller and more uniform pore size ranging 0.02 to 0.1 micron. CF has a bigger pore size of 0.5 micron, which means CF is incapable of filtering out viruses, which are the main cause of diarrhoea. One of the most common issues of contaminated water consumption is frequent diarrhoea that leads to severe dehydration, and we want to eliminate the cause of that through UF.
Additionally, UF hollow-fibre is more lightweight, has a higher active surface area and thinner filtration layer. This enables the UF hollow-fibre to achieve a higher flow rate at lower pressure. To maximize durability, UF hollow-fibre needs to be kept moist even when not in use, whereas the CF does not have to be.

HOW IS WATEROAM'S PRODUCT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER WATER FILTRATION SYSTEMS?
Many water filters are too complex, bulky, require a long set-up time, or need an energy source to generate sufficient water head to push water through the membrane. In other words, many water filters do not meet the urgent needs of disaster survivors.
The ROAMfilter™ Plus is simple, portable, durable and does not require electricity. It is designed specifically to the needs of rural and disaster-hit conditions to ensure clean and safe water is available immediately. Using the hand pump operation, it can produce up to 200L of water in an hour, however it can be connected to electricity for an even faster flow rate. It is easy to use, and can be carried around in your backpack – making it ideal for remote areas with little infrastructure.
