Why is there a need for maintenance?

It is an important process to ensure the longevity of the filter and the effective flow rate of the system. It is highly recommended for you to follow simple steps here!
The 3 different maintenance processes are as follows:
  1. Forward Flushing
  2. Chemical washing
  3. Cleaning the Pre-Filter Sponge

Before we start, check to ensure you have the following items prepared.
  1. ROAMfilter™ Plus that has been set up and operational (Check out our set up and operational guide here)
  2. Bucket of Clean water
  3. Household Bleach/ Chlorine

Forward Flushing
Forward flushing is really easy. It is essentially pumping clean water into the system to clean the membranes and dislodging the dirt from it. We recommend that you perform forward flushing daily to prevent the build up of silt particles. This will maintain the system’s flow rate and enhance the filter’s life span. Here’s how you do it.
  1. Insert the hose into a clean water source.
  2. Close the Front tap. (blue)
  3. Open the Drain valve. (red)
  4. Position the system between your feet, with the Front tap facing away from you.
  5. Step firmly on the foot stand.
  6. Pump the piston for 10 to 15 times to flush out the dirty within the system. The water coming out from the Drain valve will be dirty. Do not drink this !!!
  7. Pump until the water coming out from the Drain valve is clear.
There you have it, now you are done with Forward Flushing.

Chemical Washing
Chemical Washing is essentially pumping clean water mixed with bleach through the system. This process removes resilient organic contaminants in the system, thus enhancing the filter’s life span and ensure the system will operate with its optimum flow rate. We recommend that you do chemical washing once every 3 months. Here’s how you do it.
  1. Prepare the chemical water. Add 40mL of Household Bleach to 20L of clean water.
  2. Repeat the steps from forward flushing.

Note: Household bleach are produced in different concentrations in different parts of the world. It is strongly recommended that you evaluate the concentration of the Bleach product prior to use.
For every 20L of clean water add the following amount of Household bleach
Concentration of Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) in Bleach
5%
6%
7%
8%
9%
10%
Volume of Household Bleach
40mL
33mL
28mL
25mL
22mL
20mL
  1. After chemical washing, close the drain valve and allow the chlorinated water to stand within the system for 24 hours.
  2. Before you use the system, repeat the set up and operation process detailed here to rinse and remove the chlorine thoroughly before use.

Cleaning the pre-filter sponge
The pre-filter sponge is used to filter out larger particles, such as small rocks, twigs and sand particles. It acts as the first layer of filtration from the water source. The cleaning process is simple and we recommend that the cleaning is carried out once a week. Here’s how you do it.
demonstratioin of cleaning and replacing the pre-filter sponge from the ROAMfilter Plus
  1. Unscrew the Bottom cap to remove the pre-filter sponge.
  2. Soak the pre-filter sponge in clean water and wash it. Clear off as much dirt as possible.
  3. Put the pre-filter sponge back into the system and tighten the bottom cap.
There you have it!

Sodium hypochlorite, usually referred to as bleach liquid, is a superior disinfectant and bleaching agent. Due to its manufacture of superior quality sodium hypochlorite 10-12%, OMAL has earned a lot of respect as the leading sodium hypochlorite manufacturer in India. When it is used around kids and pets, sodium hypochlorite is absolutely safe because it is non-toxic.

Thank you for stating that cleaning the membranes and removing the dirt from them essentially involves pumping clean water into the system. My mother is concerned about the cleanliness of our water supply. I'll advise her to have the water system maintained.
